Internet of Things (IoT) Devices and Voice Interface Technology have been on the market for a number of years. While IoT is being adopted by consumers and companies at an increasing rate, Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) are fast emerging as revolutionary technology, and together are shaping both corporate and lifestyle markets.
People can now talk to their IoT devices, rather than about it. Because IoT functions on an ecosystem of connected devices, it can combine sensing and signaling technologies to collect, process, and transmit data to cloud platforms for analysis, insight, and action. This makes it an excellent partner for VUI technologies, allowing users to address and analyse their data in a more natural manner. Furthermore, Voice Technology has allowed people to engage with their data in a new way, allowing the capture of information from endpoints, analyse their insights, and take action via direct communication – without having to move in a more manual, hands-on manner. While much of the VUI focus on IoT has been on data, there are other ways to integrate the Internet of Things with VUI applications. Benefits include:
- IoT makes things easier: From an adaption standpoint, Voice interface improves how people engage with their technology. Instead of typing, it promises to provide a faster method of input – as people generally speak faster than they type. It also enables people to engage with their technology in a less cumbersome manner. This allows for users to engage with their data anywhere, anytime, by simply asking for it. As example, employees could ask their VUI to “display last week’s sales report” rather than having to bring them up manually.
- IoT is everywhere: IoT is present in most modern technology, with voice technology also becoming commonplace and being integrated into homes and offices to create ‘Smart’ environments. This could be applied to conferences, check-ins, meeting schedules, and even data access, with users accessing their insights by asking for them, instead of typing and searching.
- Its more natural: Speaking and listening are often intuitive, with people having learned to engage with language since birth. Voice is also part of the human identity. For many, it is a primary form of communication meaning it is also a more natural way to engage with each other. We see this with many VUI interfaces, with many users applying gender pronouns to their devices. Siri and Alexa become ‘she’, while Bixby is a ‘he’. As a way of interacting with devices, voice is a primary communication device and a natural, habitual behaviour. Text and reading, however, are not engaged with every hour of every day and are less natural. We have learned to use text-based methods of communication because the technology was there when voice was not. As a result, it has become the primary communicator for businesses worldwide.
While voice is a natural method of communication, Voice Interface technology does not exist to create conversations. This technology may exist in the future, with people being able to have intelligent, natural discussions with their VIU. However, these complex actions require collaboration and coordination that current advancements cannot keep up with - yet. The day when we befriend Siri, Alexa, and Cortana has not arrived, and likely won’t for several years. IoT Technology is innovating how we connect and communicate with each other, however VUI’s are still evolving to meet the complexities of the modern market. This should not detract from the core driver behind using VUI’s – to enable a more seamless, easier to use system that can be integrated for personal and professional use. From controlling Smart Houses to connecting with relevant data in business meetings, voice-oriented devices are paving the way toward a more innovative future.
